MAORI EXCURSIONISTS.
BIG CONTINGENT FOR BATANA. This morning between 50 and 60 Alaoris left Hastings by the mail train, en route for New Plymouth and the Ratana township, where they will assist at the annual native gathering held there under the auspices of the Chieftain Ratana. Tn addition to the Hastings contingent, about 100 Alaoris were aboard from the Napier and Wairoa districts, making about 160 in all, which was the limit the train could accommodate. Thus, although numbers of natives have arranged to attend the meeting from districts south of Hastings, they will have to remain behind for the present. To-morrow morning, however, the mail train will pick up the balance of the native excursionists from Napie* and Hastings and north, as well as over 100 south of Hastings. It is calculated that the number of natives attending the gathering, from the East Coast, will be between 300 and 400.
