Mr Mac Diarmid’s lantern lecture at the Hastings Presbyterian Hall on Monday, the 29th inst., will give interesting information of the Sudan. His subject will be: “In the Heart of the Great Sudan.” In response to a request from Marehu, the Alinister of Railways has granted particular facilities for the Hawke's Bay followers of Katana to proceed direct by mail train to New Plymouth, for the purpose of assisting at Katana’s Easter gathering. A part of the British Empire of which very little is known is the AngloEgyptian Sudan. According to Mr. N. Mac Diarmid, of the Sudan United Mission, who is at present in Hastings a good deal more will be heard of this region. Now that the great dam is completed at Seunar on thc Blue Nile, for the purpose of irrigating some 300,000 acres for cotton growing, and now that advantage is being taken of the rainfall of the Southern Sudan, it is believed that the Sudan will shortly’ become the chief source of supply of cotton for the British Empire.
