Rockefeller Foundation

CIFT OF £1,205,000. TO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE HOSPITAL. HASTINGS SUBSCRIPTIONS INVITED. Complying with the Hon. J. G. Coates’ request, the Mayor of Hastings invites subscriptions from residents in Hastings and district for funds to assist in the endowment of the New Zealand bed in the University College Hospital, Gower street, London. Recently the Rockefeller Foundation made a gift of £1,205,000 to this ) hospital for the advancement of medical education and research. Under this benefaction considerable additions are being made to the hospital and medical school, and the number of beds will have to be increased. This means the addition of at least 180 beds, and the question of endowing them, one to be jiamed after each of the overseas dominions, has been placed in the hands of a committee. So far only £B9B has been collected for the New Zealand bed, and the Premier, the Hon. J. G. Coates, now seeks the assistance of the Mayor in inviting the co-operation of the people of Hastings and district in providing a portion ol the cost. At the Mayor’s request the “Tribune” opens a subscription list in which all moneys received will be duly acknowledged. The University College Hospital Medical School to which the benefaction was granted, is situated in University street, facing the hospital, which is m Gower street. It is equipped with teaching units in medicine and surgery, and an obsteric unit will shortly be instituted. The hospital was founded in 1833, and rebuilt and enlarged in 1897-1905, by the munificence of Sir John Blundel Maple. It was at this hospital that Liston, on December 21, 1846, performed an operation under an anaesthetic in Great Britain, using ether for the first time for the purpose.
