MINISTER OF LANDS.

VISIT TO NORTHERN HAWKE’S BAY. The Hon. A. D. McLeod. Minister of Lands, arrived in Napier last night on his return to Wairoa. No public deputations were received but the Minister met the chairman and a committee of the Hawke’s Bpy County Council with whom he discussed various matters relative to county affairs. Speaking to a “Tribune” representative, the Minister said that there was nothing for him to say regarding his visit to the district of Northern Hawke’s Bay. It had been mainly a tour of inspection of things in general, and the blackberry pest in particular. PROPOSED GROUPING OF HOLDINGS. Questioned regarding his statement to a deputation of settlers at Kaiwaka when the point that many of the holdings were too small, was raised, that the Department would give favourable consideration to the granting of transgcr in cases where men made arrangements between themselvs to combine other holdings, the Minister said that this was not a new departure. The existing machinery provided for cases of this nature and such transfers had been granted in sundry cases during the past two years. He added that in most cases the whole of one holding was not transferred to one man. Moro usually the holding was split between several different men.
