The Misses Banks (3) are spending their vacation with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Banks, of the Central Hastings. It is most satisfactory to learn that the child of Mr. and Mrs. T. Fitzgibbon, of Hastings, who was so severely burnt a couple of weeks ago, is now rapidly recovering. For New Year Gifts we have a splendid variety of handkerchiefs in fancy boxes, powder puffs, perfumes, sunshades, marabouts, vanity cases, manicure sets, bathing suits and caps at Sutherland’s. The position at Puketitiri remains the same as yesterday, the danger of fire, as far as the mills are concerned, having disappeared with th e change of wind, but should the wind return to its original quarter the danger will bo renewed and the mill hands, consequently. continue to bo on the alert. A party of Thames motorists consisting of W. Judd and his wife and son (Allan) and daughter, with Leslie Judd (a cousin), had a sensational experience' on the Murchison road, Nelson, yesterday. While negotiating a bend they met a motor lorry, and as they were passing the edge of the road gave way. precipitating the car and the occupants 30 feet down the bank, the car coming to rest against a tree stump. The occupants were shot out through the top of the hood, but all escaped injury, except the two ladies, Mrs Judd receiving severe facial injuries, including a broken nose, and her daughter a severe cut on the leg. Both are in hospital, hut their condition is not serie Xs.
