BELOW ZERO.
INTENSE COLD IN AMERICA. DEATHS AND SUFFERING. New York, Dec. 27. The cold wave is increasing in intensity and spreading over a wider area in the United States. The mercury has been lowest in Nile City, Montana, where is reached 28 below zero, while in Montreal it was 13 below, m Chicago eight below, in New York seven above, in Atalanta, Georgia, 18 above. There have been three deaths from cold in New York and a total of nine in Chicago. Coastguards, in a freezing gale, arc attempting to rescue a crew of five from a schooner aground in Chesapeake Bay. Fires totalled 50 in New York and 130 in Chicago. Numerous automobile accidents resulted from the icy sitcom. The suffering is especially acute amongst the families of the striking anthracite miners in Pennyslvania. Mission societies all over the country are taxed to the utmost to provide food and shelter for unfortunates. Weather forecasters predict no relief before tho New Year. —(A. and N.Z.,
