New Zealand Championships FIRST DAY’S PLAY. A FEW SURPRISES. Christchurch, Dec. 27. The New Zealand tennis championships were commenced at 9',30 on Saturday on the United courts, 15 of which were in use. The weather was brilliantly clear after Christmas rain, and the courts were true and hard. A light nor’-wester did not develop sufficiently io interfere with play, but the day was oppressively hot, and this pro. bably accounted lor the fact that the play generally was a little below expectations. The first two rounds of the men’s championships were completed, leaving sixteen men in. Two surprises of the meeting were the defeat of Page, formerly of Auckland, by Aitken. Canterbury’s sixth man, and the defeat of .Noel Wilson. Wellington’s fust man, by E. B. AV. Smyth, who has practised mostly on hard courts at Dunedin. 'Hie Auckland champion. Griffiths, went down to Wallace, while Lowry appeared to great disadvantage against Peacock, who Forced him into constant errors. In the ladies’ championship, the biggest surprise of the meeting was provided by the defeat of -Miss Cato, Hawke’s Bay. by an almost unknown suburban player. Miss Reed, who simply has a heavy forehand chop and nothing else. Miss Wyke’s defeat of Miss Marion Macfarlane was not unexpected, as sho is a very cool player. Auckland’s fust ladies, Misses Marjorie Alacfarlane and Knight, won by default, and Miss Spiers only lost one game in her singles anil three games altogether during the day, including two ladies’ doubles. Mrs Scott (neo McLaren), on the other hand, had ha id work in heating .Miss Ferrier. Canterbury’s fifth lady. Results:— MEN’S SINGLES. First Round.—E. B. AV. Smyth beat L. J. Hill. 6—l. 6—o, 6—o; 1.
