A BORROWED CAR.

COLLISION AT AVAIPAWA. TWO YOUNG MEN INJURED. A motor-car, owned by Mr. J. Newrick, of Hastings, which is alleged to have been taken from the Waipukurau racecourse on Boxing Day, collided with another car, driven by Miss I'reda Couper, at the junction of Ruatamwha and Waverly streets, Waipawa, resulting in injuries to two young mon, who are now in the A\ aipukurau Hospital suffering from curs and shock. It is stated that the driver ol Mr. Newrick’s car immediately decamped after the accident. leaving the injured men, one of whom was his brother, to look after themselves. It is further stated that the man concerned, Henry Turner, was driven to the Waipukurau races by Mr. Newnck, who left his car inside tho course. Turner took the car and picked up two men, William Frederick Turner and James Peters, and took them for a ride. At the intersection of the two streets at Waipawa a car driven by Miss Freda Couper, containing her mother, a Miss Aitken and Mr D. Couper, who had just come out of the Waipukurau Hospital, , and Turner’s car collided. William Turner and James Peters were thrown out and rendered temporarily unconscious, while -Miss Couper and Miss Aitken wertf cut by flying glass. Mr Newrick, at the conclusion of the racing, could not find his car and reported it as missing to the police at Waipukurau, but was very surprised when on his way home to.see it partially wrecked at Waipawa. The police have the matter in hand, but up to midday to-day Henry Turner had not reported the accident to the police. AN ARREST. In connection with the disappearance of the motor car from Waipukurau. and the subsequent collision at Waipawa. the Hastings police made inquiries, with the result that Constable Heffernan arrested Henry RicJiaro Turner, at Haveloek North, this morning, and lie will appear before tne Court, at Hastings to-morrow, charged with: (1) Taking a motor car without lawful authority; <_2) driving a motor car recklessly; and (3) driving a motor car while in a state of intoxication.
