Shipping in 1923), giving evidence before t..e Coal Commission, said that the reiiuciion of the cost of coal by 5s a ton would mean a reduction of £2400 in the cost of building a cargo boat of 7500 tons. Mr. Richard Holt (a partner in Allred ilolt and Co., shipowners) stated that the South Wales dockers were seriously hampering the export trade, because they refused to work the hours commonly worked abroad. • v ardilf, Newcastle, and Hull take Irom eight to 10 days to load a steamer of 8000 tons,” he said. America and Rotterdam do the same work in three days.” Mr. Holt said he had frequently ordered steamers . go to Holland to load, in order- to save time. ”1 am sorry for the miners,” he added, “iiiey are in the same boat as shipbuilding and agriculture, i hey are suffering because other people are getting too much.”—(Sydney •".Sun” special).
