Soft Woods Famine

UNREPLENISHED FORESTS. A TIMELY WARNING. (Received 24, 11.25 a.m.) Sydney, Dec. 24. Sir Herbert Mathews, secretary of the Central Council of Agriculture, London, arrived on route .to New Zealand. He issued a warning that a famine in soft woods was imminent. Sir Herbert said that although Australia and New Zealand used large quantities of soft woods, little was being done to replenish their forests. This, unhappily, was the position throughout the world, but New Zealand, fortunately, was taking reafforestation seriously. The New Zealand methods, however, could not be adopted in England, because early-maturing soft woods could not be grown in Groat Britain.
