CHRISTMAS EVE TRAFFIC. NO CARS IN HERETAUNGA STREET. The Mayor, at last night’s council meeting, d-rew attention to the necessity for keeping Heretaunga street, from Hastings street to Nelson street, clear of vehicular traffic on Christmas Eve, as recommended by Inspector Fawcett and Sergeant Hogan. The.v suggested that the vehicular traffic between the streets mentioned be diverted, from 5.30 to 9.30 p.m. His Worship agreed with the proposal, pointing out the largo pedestrian traffic in the business centre on Christmas J 4 we «qnd saying that extra provision could be made for parking cars in Russell street, in addition to the other parkmg areas in the side streets. Donovan considered that owners of cars would run the risk of losing them in the back streets. Cr. Johnson agreed that the suggestion was a wise one because the people, especially the children, should have ff/’st call on the main thoroughfare on Christmas Eve, particularly ns there would be such a considerable number of women with perambulators. He did not think the business people would be affected and the principle should be ‘‘safety first.” He congratulated t.he inspector and Sergeant Hogan on their recommendation.
