EXPLOSION AND FIRE.
ST A F I’O RDSIITR E CO] 1E R Y DISASTER. (Received 21~9.10 a.m.) London, Dec. 20. There is little hone of saving six men left in the Birchenwood colliery, Staffordshire, wnere an explosion and fire occurred. There were 378 men in the pit when the explosion occurred. Many of these were burnt, and others had to hack their way out.
A week-end cable stated that an explosion in the Birchenwood colliery, Kindsgrove, Staffordshire, occurred when the afternoon shift was still below ground. Fire followed the explosion. Rescuers rushed to the scene, worked heroically all night and saved all except seven men. Ono body was brought up. Rescue efiorta were later abandoned owing to the rapid spread of the fire.
