Seamen’s Dependents

Starving in England SUFFERERS BY THE STRIKE. MR. HAVELOCK WILSON’S APPEAL. (By Cable—Press Association—Copyright.) (Received 19, 9.15 a.m.) London, Dec. 18. Air. Havelock Wilson is cabling an appeal to Australian newspapers to

fund on behalf of 3000 women and children victims of the strike, who are hungry and without clothes in British ports. Mr. Wilson’s union has already spent £3OOO, and is prepared to spend another £3OOO.

Air Wilson says that lie possesses ample evidence that 75 per cent, of the strikers left their ships through intimidation. He recognises that Australia was hard hit by the strike, but hopes she will remember that British seamen stood by the Empire when it was in dire distress.

Air. Wilson also cabled Air. Walsh, describing the distress, and adding: This is the result of the late seamen’s unofficial strike, for which you and others were directly responsible. The Seamen’s Union is prepared to give £3OOO to the women and children if you will cable a similar amount. These poor people can-

not be left to starve over Christmas. Cable your £3OOO to Citrine, secretary of the Trades Union Congress, who will see to its distribution. It is better to spend the money on this than on litigation. If you fail, you will have to meet these women and children on your arrival in this country.”—(A. and N.Z.)
