Oliver also scored the highest average marks for the year, thereby winning the prize presented by tlie Old Students’ Association. Last year lie was only one point short of the same distinction.

Mr. James Waugh MoKnight, one of Napier’s oldest citizens, passed away yesterday at the age of 86 years Many years ago the late* Mr. MeKnight conducted an iron foundry in Napier, but after going out of business joined the staff of J. J. Niven and Co. The deepest sympathy will be extended to the members of the family in their bereavement.

The funeral of Mrs E. Lamberton took place yesterday afternoon, when the remains, preceded bv the Salvation Army band playing suitable hymns, wore followed by a representative gathering of citizens to the Hastings cemetery, where the graveside service was conducted I'.v Captain '1 home (Salvation Army. Smart, of Havelock North, left Hastings this morning for Christchurch, in reply to an invitation to attend the 75th anniversary of tlie foundation of the Canterbury province. The celebrations commence next Saturday, when tho arrivals in the province by the first six ships will be entertained at luncheon, and an historical pageant will parade the principal streets. Mr. Smart arrived by tho “Randolf,” tho second ship, on December 16, 1850, after a three months’ voyage from England. On Sunday, December 13. a service will be held in the Christchurch Cathedral and other churches in tho morning, and at Lyttelton in the. evening. Monday and Tuesday will be devoted to con certs, tableaux and other amusements and on Wednesday the pioneers will bo entertained at a garden party in the morning, and in the afternoon by tlie Mayor of Lyttelton, to be followed by a public social gathering. Altogether a good time seems to he in store for the hardy pilgrims, who so successfully pioneered the prosperous province of Canterbury.
