NEW FACILITIES.
POST OFFICE REFORMS. Sonic interesting informal ion concerning the work of the Post and Tele graph Department was given by the Postmaster-General v&ir James Parr) when he was declaring the new post office at New Brighton open for business. For the period of seven months ended on October 31st last, the revenue amounted to £1,802,523, as against £1,099,627 for the same period last year, ai. increase of £102,896. “This is considered to be a very satisfactory state of affairs, indicating the sound financial position existing at the present lime.” (•‘.anniented Sir James.
A new departure which had just licen inaugurated was that of cheap postal rates for hooks sent, between libraries and subscribers to libraries, and also between book clubs and subscril«vrs. This would prove a boon to residents in isolated country districts.
“Another benefit we have inaugraut di.’’ continued the Minister, “is that the facilities for forwarding between Great Britain and Ncw r Zealand articles of gold, silver, precious stones, jewel lory, etc., have recently been widened to provide for transmission or such articles by letter post under a system known as the insurance box service Formerly such valuables could be for warded only by insured parcel post The maximum weight for an insured box is two pounds, and the dimensions must not exceed in length 12 inches, and breadth or depth 4 incites. The postage rate on insured boxes is fixed at 2d an ounce, with a minimum charge of lOd. Tn addition there must be paid an insurance fee of B<l for the first £l2 of insured value, and .’>.l for each additional <l2 of insured value. The limit of insurance is £4oo.’’
