The First Tank
AN INVENTOR’S CLAIM. KITCHENER WANTED IT. (Received 25, 1.45 p.m.) London, Nov. 24. Who invented the tank is being revived in the High Court, where Mr Justice McCardie is hearing a petition of right on behalf of Captain . edc Bentley. claiming £300,000 from the Crown. Counsel for plaintiff said that the late Lord Kitchener, who plaintiff knew in the Boer War, requested him, in October, 1914, to produced an armoured car which would be independent of roads. Plaintiff suggested a caterpiller with an armoured body. He described a three hours’ after-dinner interview with Lord Kitchener at his house, at which Bentley illustrated the design with rubber bands and pins. He asserted that Lord Kitchener requested Bentley nyt to patent the claim for reasons of secrecy. He declared that he and Lord Kitchener discussed the use of poison gas in 1914. —(A. and N.Z. j
