NAPIER HOSPITAL EXTENSIONS.

NURSES’ HOME AND OFFICES. A CREDITABLE BLOCK. Work is proceeding apace on the new nurses’ home and office buildings of the Napier Hospital, which a “Tribune” representative had the privilege of being shown over to-day. Already the construction has reached a stage at which even the untrained eye can discern sufficient to give the fullest credit to the architects, Messrs Massey, Hyland and Phillips, of Hastings, and the contiactors, Messrs Hi Hen and Howard, of Masterton, I'or the design and execution | respectively. It is anticipated haft the work, which has been in progress for some months, will be completed by next April. It is doubtful if the staff of any hospital in the Dominion will be better off han that of Napier, when they enter into possession of their new premises. 'The building, which will ho of fourstory, is in Spanish style, and despite the irregular form which it was necessary Io adopt, the design is finely conceived, and most attractive to the eye. It is doubtful if there are any views to surpass those which will delight the eye of those destined to occupy this block of buildings. The windows, balconv and roof command aspect of i!;c plains of Hawke’s Bay to tho north and south and from the sea to the ranges. The bedrooms, of which there are 45. arc designed with consideration for the comfort of the occupants, while lho matron’s and sub-matron’s suites will ho luxurious. A roomy wardrobe built into the wall is an adjunct to every bedroom. The excavations for the foundations were sunk to a depth of eight feet and the building will, .when completed, rise to a height of about 60 feet, and the terraced roof will be higher above sea level than any other in Napier. fliat the operations are not on a small scale can be gauged from the fact that the contract price is £20.000. ami a quarter of a million bricks will he used.
