NAPIER MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

TO-DAY’S PROCEEDINGS. (Before Mr. R. AV. Dyer, S.M.) The following cases were dealt with this morning:— Unlighted Cycles.—Fines of £1 and 7/- costs for riding bicycles without lights were inflicted on Kenneth McLean, Julian Gregg, Leslie Berry, Wilfred Robinson and James Palmer. Military Cases.—Kenneth Carruck McLennan and Vere Bertram Dawson Foster appeared, charged with failing to register in accordance with the requirements of the Defence Act. McLennan was convicted and ordered to pay 7/- costs and Foster was fined £1 and 7/- costs DANGEROUS DRIVING. Alan Mclntosh appeared to answer to a charge of driving a motor truck in a manner dangerous to the public on Shakespeare road on July 26th. He pleaded not guilty and was not represented by counsel. James George stated that he saw a truck pass him at a speed which he estimated at about 30 miles per liour and slow up at the Post Office. Constable Pirater also gave evidence that ho saw the defendant travelling at a high speed. Defendant, in evidence, said that his speed was 15 to 20 miles per hour, not more than 20. He had been on the sick list and was still under the doctor and was so weak that he found it difficult to control the car and could not have hold it on the road at the speed at which he had been accused of drivine-. His AVorship commented that if defendant was in such a, state of weakness he should not he driving, as it was dangerous. He would convict and inflict a fine of £2 and 14/- costs. CHINESE TRAFFIC OFFENDERS. John Chor, greengrocer., of Port Ahuriri, was charged with leaving a motor truck standing in Dalton street for a longer period than 20 minutes, on July 28th. He failed to put in an appearance and was fined £1 and £1 8/- costs. Oh Hop, another greengrocer of Port Ahuriri, also failed to appear in answer to a charge of allowing a vehicle to remain in one place for*more ihan five minutes, and was fined £1 and £1 10/- costs. BUILDING BA-LAWS. A charge under the borough building by-laws of altering and adding to a building in Dickens street without first submitting plans to the thorough building inspector, was entered against Robert Andrew Lee (Mr. M. IL Grant). A plea of guilty to both charges was entered. Mr. IL B. Lusk, for the Borough Council, said that defendant was inclined to regard himself as a law uiuo himself and had given some trouble to the council. A heavy penalty was not pressed for. Mr. said that defendant had niit infringed the Ly-laws intentionally but under a misappreheiuion. A fine of 5 - and £1 .* ... I inflicted on each charge.
