Hastings Central School

CHILDREN’S FANCY BALL. JOYFUL TIME FOR ALL. The annual fancy dress ball in connection with the Hastings Central School was held at tho Olyinpia Cabaret last night, when the large hall was gaily decorated for the occasion and high festivity was the presiding spirit of the evening The varied costumes of the children gave an added brilliance to the scene and the whole assemblage, from the tinnest babies to tho senior pupils, let themselves go in the joyus abandonment and frank delight so deliciously refreshing to view. Tho fancy dresses were vivid and, In some cases, evinced much, originality and artistry in conception and design, so that the judges had no easy task to make their awards from the grand inarch, five hundred strong, as, led by Marie Melrose and Edis Lane, impersonating a Russian bridal pair, the children paraded the hall, marching and counter marching in their flaming courings, to tho spirited music of Walden’s Band, and under the direction of the teachers. The march stepped off at 8 o’clock sharp, presenting quite an imposing spectacle, which was looked on with interest by the large number of adults present, and, at the conclusion tho judges’ lists were ready for announcement, without undue delay.

The dancing commenced immediately after, under tho direction of tho teaching staff, and the boys and girls had the time of their lives up to midnight, when the revels ended for the seniors, the little ones having been taken homo to their beds at an earlier hour. During the evening the band was assisted hy Mrs E. Culver at tho piano. The supper arrangements were complete and the whole proceedings carried out by Messrs J. Banks and J. Bark, assisted by the rest of tho teaching staff and the members of tho school committee, were absolutely successful from every point of view. Mesdames G. Maddison (Mayoress), G. McKay, J. Bark, A.
