A FAITHFUL OLD HORSE.

DEAD AT FORTY YEARS. It is not often that, an ordinary horse, apart from some special breed of long lived pony common throughout .he world, lives to over forty years of age. Last week, at Te Kuiti, an old Jiorse who was referred to in the Press about two years ago as probably the oldest horse in the Dominion lay down on one of the high hills on a IOOb-acre farm and died. The faithful old animal had earn ed three generations of children to school, and for over a decade carried th ? local paper between Putea. and Waverley after his school work was done, a distance there and back of over 2b miles. To carry four children a distance of four miles to school, ami then do his paper job after that, is what was termed good going. He got to be a very wise old horse, and if every any of th ■ school children slipped off his back ha turned back with a knowing air ti!.‘ the youngster remounted. In his old age. when he was past work, nothing could make him keep down in the val leys, where he would get shelter from the winter winds. He was often seen up near the trig station on the highes: hill in To Kuiti. where people climb to get a view of Mounts Egmont, Tongar iro and Ruapehu. He had weathered the recent storms, and then in the full sunshine he heaved a sigh, ami a faithful old animal was at rest. He was buried on the hillside.
