FALSE INCOME RETURNS.
FAULTY COMMERCIAL SYSTEM. WELL-KNOWN FIRM HEAVILY FINED. Auckland, June 19. At the Police Court to-day the Camp-bell-Ehrenfried Company and two of its officers, Sidney Horace Abell and Albert Ernest Bollard, were each charged with making false income returns. Six’ charges were preferred, and tho court imposed flues of £lOO and costs in respect of each of the six charges, two against tho company and two against each of the other defendants. Counsel for the defence said he had pleaded guilty as the Act was all-em-bracing, and it was hard to resist it even though the offences were only the result of negligence. At the time of tho offence, 1920 and 1921. conditions were abnormal. The managing director was absent and had no knowledge of the offence. Tho company’s managers followed a commercial system which evidently did not conform to the provision of the Land and Income Tax Act or the requirements of tho Department.
