EXTENSION AND SITE FOR YARDS. DEPARTMENTAL REGULATIONS. Mr G. F. Clapcott, Napier Borough Engineer, recently interviewed while in Wellington the Engineer-in-Chief of Railways, regarding the Borough Council’s desire to extend the Thackeray street tram through from Faraday street to George’s Drive, and the necessity for new sites for the Public Works yard and its siding. The Council’s proposals wore favourably received bv both Departments. The conditions laid down by the Public Works Department are:— Tbe Department agrees to take the site suggested for a new yard, which is coloured blue on plan, and compriaea areas to be purchased from Messrs Holt and Sons. Graham and Shaw. I'he site whore uneven is to be levelled up to the satisfaction of the Department and arrangement* made to obtain the consent of the Railway Department to lay the new siding along the railwav reserve adjoining new site in place of the original proposal The Corporation to reimburse the Public Works Department in event of the total cost of change over exceeding the Department’s liab’lity in purchasing land and laying siding at the present site. The Corporation to pipe in the existing open ditch along side tbe new rite at s-uch positions as the Department may require, to giv© access by railwav siding and roadwav to the site, also put old Port railwav track in a condition to allow of cart access from Faraday street. Regarding th© Railwav Department, the new site for siding on railwav reserve has bc©n approved and the Department will practically grant the Public Works Department the u*e of same as under the original proposal, and tbe Depart mon t will have the work of laving the siding put in hand immediately. . Speaking generally the arrangements made are, that the three public bodies mutuallr agree to meet each other ■ wishes as far as is possible.
