TO-DAY’S SITTING. (Before Mr R. W. Dyer,, S.M.) BY-LAW CASES. For allowing a car to stand on the Marine Parade without lights, Herbert 'Ziele was fined £2 and 7s costs. E. L. R. Hocking for keeping an undegistered dog was fined £1 and 13s costs. The inspector stated that the registration fee was paid on Saturday although he had warned the defendant on several occasions.. .. ON LICENSED PREMISES. Patrick O’ShanneSsy for being on licensed premises after hours was fined £2 and 7s in default 14 days’ imprisonment. TRUANCY. George McDonald (Mr C. H. Bissen) pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to send his child to school at Meeanee. Mr Bissen explained that the child had been kept at home on account of having had The parents had not applied for exemption. His Worship imposed the minimum fine of 2s and £1 8s costs. OPIUM SMOKING. Ah Fong (Mr Bissen) pleaded guilty to charges of being in possession of opium and of smoking opium. “I smoke it for 34 years” stated the defendant. Mr AV. Rose, who appeared on behalf of the Customs Department, stated that defendant was found with opium and the usual paraphernalia for smoking opium. The premises certainly looked as if they were used as a smoking den. Mr Bissen said that there was nothing to say on behalf of the defendant only that he was an opium addict and the room was not a smoking den as the defendant was the only oue who smoked opium. Fines totalling £7O and 10s costs were imposed. ‘‘lf he comes hero again X shall fin? him the maximum amount of £lOO.l suppose he can pay these fines all right; these fellows usually have plenty of money,” said His Worship. Similar charges against Ah Sing were on tho application of Mr Rose, withdrawn.
