The Moroccan War
Spaniards in Retreat DISORDERED FLIGHT TO THE COAST. FRANCE AND THE RIFFS. IBy Cable—Press Association— Copyright..] (Received 17, 9.40 a.m.) London, Nov. 16. “The Times’s” Paris correspondent, discussing the French policy in Morocco, says:—The completeness of the Spanish evacuation and the danger of further chaos in Spain, are not favourable to a Franco-Spanish agreement. The Spanish forces are precipitately retreating to the coast. So swift is their disordered retreat that, while courtesy forbids calling it a flight, yet military observers cannot catch up with the movement by moving flags on their maps. The Riff is being left free from supervision by any European Power, and Abdel Krun may well speak of in-' dependence, but France cannot permit the creation of a native state which would seriously hamper her Moroccan occupation. Therefore, France will inevitably have to decide on. some definite line of action, although this goes against their grain at present wlien money is scarce and men even more scarce.
“The Times” adds that France considers that, in her own interests, Britain must approve a firm policy towards Abdel Krim, and whatever decisions are taken British consent and co-operation will be sought as a necessary corollary to the success of the colonial policy in which both are equally interested.—(Times.)
