Westshore Bridge
THE RESIDENTS’ REQUEST.
COUNTY COUNCIL DISCUSSION
At to-day’s meeting of The Hawke’s Bay County Council, the chairman reported having met a deputation from the Westshore residents concerning the old Westshore bridge, and having explained the question of responsibility of the bridge to it, and that owing to its very dangerous condition the Council was anxious that the bridge should be definitely closed before any loss of life occurred.
Or. Crosse said he did not consider that they could spend any money except on a legal road and no one could call this a legal road. Father Seymour said that part of the district w*as really a part of Napier. He suggested that steps should be taken to see if the Napier Borough Council would not include Westshore in its district.
Air. Smith agreed with Cr. Seymour that the sympathies of Westshore were really with Napier and considered that in the meantime the Harbour Board should accept full responsibility for the bridge. It was agreed to proceed with the work of constructing the footpath round the embankment and leave the bridge to the Napier local authorities. Regarding the handing over of the old Westshore bridge to the Council, the chairman explained that he had asked the Harbour Board to hold the matter up for a month to see what could be done. It was not a question of spending anything but getting the Ha rbour Board to accept respon si bi lit y.
