WAIPAWA.

(Own correspondent.) THE SANATORIUM. Last Tuesday was Waipawa’s fixture for the Sanatorium visit and several cars left here laden with delicacies for the patients. In the evening members of the Waipawa Savage Club visited the institution and gave a pleasing entertainment. LIEUT. FRICKLETON, V.C. Lieutenant S. Frickleton, who is in command of this military district, is on a visit to the town in connection with a week’s military training being held on the Wahiawa Golf Club course. Mention of Lieutenant Frickleton re. calls his exploits in France as recorded in the official history of the brigade, to which he was attached and for which he was awarded the V.C. Between the German guns and our men a barrage was falling which was an obstacle to us and a protection to the Germans. Lance-Corporal Frickleton. followed by his section crept close to the barrage and at the first opportunity dashed through and fell upon the crew of the nearest gun with bomb and bayonet, and destroyed them all. He then repeated the performance to the crew of the second gun and then destroyed the nine men in the dug-out below who refused to come out. The action prevented further casualties to the men coming forward and led to the complete capture of the objective. GENERAL.

The Waipawa District High School staff is to be congratulated on the successes at the recent teachers’ examinations held in Napier. The passes represented 100 per cent and special mention is made cf the drawing of one of the candidates. The following are the names of the candidates: —Misses C. Nielson D. Davy. B. Milburn, J. Eilison, M. Pellow, and Mr. E. Watts. A movement is on foot in the town to either institute a club or revive the Scout organisation in the interest of the lads of the town. The object commands itself to the citizens.
