End of the Session

THE CLOSING SPEECHES. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. (Per Press Association.) Wellington* Nov. 6. When the House resumed after the luncheon adjournment, a message was received from the Legislative Council to the effect that they had passed the Appropriation Bill. The Speaker then proceeded to Government House to procure His Excellency’s signature to the measure. On returning at 4.50 the Speaker announced that His Excellency had been pleased to accord the Royal assent to the measure. After the House had received a number of Parliamentary papers, Mr. Massey delivered a valedictory speech, in which he paid compliments to the Speaker, Chairman of Committees and other who by hard work and capable service had contributed to the work of the session, during which 97 bills were passed. This, he thought, constituted a record. He wished members on all sides of the House a pleasant recess. Mr. Wilford and Mr. Holland seconded the remarks of the Prime Minister, and on behalf of what he called the “dominant party,” Mr. G. Witty expressed the felicitations of the Independents. The Speaker and Mr. Young made a suitable response, Mr. Massey then moved that the House do now adjourn. This was challenged, and on a disvision the adjournment was agreed to by 23 to 21, and the third session of the twentyfirst Parliament came to an end at 5.35 p.m. with the singing of the National Anthem. LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The'Legislative Council met at 10.30 a.m. to-day. Idle Council agreed with minor amendments proposed by the GovernorGeneral in the Motor Vehicles Bill. Managers were set up for the second conference on the Cawthron Trust Bill. On resuming the Council passed the Appropriation Bill- and after a number of valedictory speeches finally adjourned.
