The members of the Hastings Orphans’ Club will be the guests of Mr H. M. Campbell at “Horonui” on Sunday next. Cars will leave Russell street at 1-30 p.m. The revised prices of petrol and kerosent iiublished yesterday are the list prices which apply to the four cities. At other places the prices are subject to freight charges- j . At yesterday’s meeting of t|ie Hawke’s Bay Rivers Board it was decided to meet the members of the Hawke’s Bay County Council for a conference on flood drainage. The Right Rev. Dr. Sedgwick, Bishop of Waiapu, conducted a confirmation service at St. Matthew’s Church, Hastings, last night, when he delivered an interesting and instructive address on the Sacrament to a large congregation. At the conclusion of his address, he administered confirmation to tiSfrtythree candidates. A heavy hailstorm was experienced at Twyford thi s morning at 11 o’clock, and hail also iell at Stortford Lodge, but although rain fell heavily at the same hour in the centre of Hastings, there was no hail in the downpour. The hail stones were not very large so that it is hoped the fruit crop will escape damage. An Auckland telegram states that by Master Drapers and the Federated Shop Assistants, the late night will be observed until 9 p.m. on Friday and the shops will close at 12.15 on Saturday. This applies to Auckland city and suburbs only. A rather unique event occurred at the conclusion of the Wanganui Garrison Band’s concert on Sunday afternoon. Members of the Band were invited to te residence of Miss M. Duncan, where they heard a number of records which were played into the gramophone by the Garrison Band about twenty years ago. The Hastings Community Club are inviting Mr "Haugen Holenbergh. the eminent Danish pianist, to give a private recital in Hastings towards the end of the next week. Mr Holenbergh, by special request of their Majesties, has given many recitals before the King and Queen of Denmark. Last week he gave a recital for the Christchurch Orchestral Society, and this week he gives a recital m Wellington. The Mayor of Hastings (Mr. G. Maddison) has received a communication from the Public Works Department. saying that tenders were,, being called for forming and continuing Jellicoe street, in the Lomas Settlement. through to Cqllinge road. The accomplishment of this work will prove a great convenience to the public and will be very satisfactory to the Hastings Borough Council, through whose agency the Department has been induced to act.

The Mayor of Hastings (Mr. G. Maddison) has received a letter from Mr. A. A. George, chairman of committees at the recent conference of the New Zealand Cycling and Athletic Union, thanking His Worship for h»s material assistance and expressing the hope that the excellent advertisement of Hastings, which was hoped for would result q culmination which would : lie largely due to the interest and sympathy shown by the Mayor. At a meeting of the Dannevirke Borough Council a letter was received ftom the Government Life Insurance Department regretting it was unable to entertain the council’s application for a loan of £lO,OOO. The Mayor said inquiries had been made from other sources in Dunedin for money but according to a letter by the town clerk from a firm of sharebrokers Dunedin was at present “dry.” The council, however, were still pursuing their inquiries. Swordfish, mako shark and kingfish will be sought after by a fishing expedition that will leave Auckland at the end of December and remain for a month in the various “grounds” between Mayor Island, Bay of Plenty, and Three Kings. A steamer or an auxiliary cutter is to be chartered, and the dozen or so members of the party will split up the expenses between them. The New Zealand Publicity Department will probably send a photographer on the trip. The first annual meeting of the Hawke’s Bay branch of the New Zealand Trained Nurses’ Association was held in Napipr on Monday. The election of the new council resulted as follows:—Misses Coles. Gilmer, Hitchman, Inglis, Macdonald, McLean, Ballot, Rendall (Hastings), Linton (representing midwifery nurses), Weils; nori, members. Drs. Bernau and Harvey. A bureau for the supply of trained nurses and midwives was formed, with Miss Pallot in charge. She reported that during the seven months since the bureau was opened there had been over 100 calls. Nurses could not be supplied in all cases owing to a shortage. After the business had been dealt with the report of the delegates to the Central Council ofi the Association was received, and tea was handed round. Mr Tombs had arranged a very enjoyable programme of musicSongs were sung delightfully bv the Misses Bear. Carter and Wrightson, arid M. Tombs played a pianoforte solo and the accompaniments.
