NAPIER BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. The Napier Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. B. Andrew), Councillors W. J. McGrath, T. ' A. Heath, J. Black, F. G. Smith, H. M. Bennett J. C. Bryant, R. B. Clark, and C- R. Spackman. Leave of absence was granted to Councillor Crewe. CORRESPONDENCE. The Napier Thirty Thousand Club applied for permission to hold the 1924 Mardi Gras on the Marine Parade on December 26, December 27, and December 31. Permission was also sought to rope off the area from Coote road to i Raffles street and charge for admis- ! sion, the club to be allowed full control of the Marine Parade, beach and I side shows. | It was decided to ask the club to send a deputation to meet the Roads and Reserves Committee, that committee being given power to act in the matter. The Mayor presented a petition from a number of residents asking that 1 something be done in regard to the opening of George’s Drive from Carnell street to Hyderabad road. I It was agreed to inform the petitioners that the Railway Department was ‘ at present taking steps to have the i old line to the Port taken up and the | new one put into use. Immediately that was done the Department would ' allow the opening up of George’s Drive. Th Napier Jubilee Celebrations Committee wrote asking if the Council would consider the emptying of the Baths on one evening during the celebrations so ag to enable the pool to be used as a stadium for boxing and wrestling.—The matter was referred to the Baths Committee with power to act, GENERAL. The Town Clerk was instructed to furnish for next meeting a report in detail of all rates outstanding for over i twelve months. I The application of the Pirates Swimming and Life Saving Club for the use of the Municipal Baths on the night of December 27 was referred to the Baths Committee. It was agreed that no alteration be made in the existing arrangements for parking cars in the square near the Municipal Theatre. It was decided to inform the Commissioner of Crown Lands that the Council was prepared to construct a road through the education reserve for ! £792. The borough engineer was instructed to endeavour to protect the banks in | Tiffin Park from persons taking short cuts instead of keeping to the footpaths, and also to have some seats placed in the park. i The offer of the trustees of t*e estate of the late J. D, Ormond to dedicate as a public road a strip of land 11.91 links wide and 265.15 links in length to th Council free of charge on condition that the Council bear the costs of dedication was referred to the Works Committee.
