Combined Universities CONSERVATIVE AND LIBERAL RETURNED. CONCLUDING RESULTS. (By Cable—Pre*« Aeeoolation—Copyright (Received 4, 11.5 a.m.) London, Nov. 3. The election for two seats for the English Combined tjniversities resulted in the return of Sir Martin Conway, Conservative, and Mr. H. A. L. Fisher, Liberal. Another Liberal, Sir Murdoch MacDonald, was returned for Inverness.— (Reuter.) THE CHANGE-OVER. MR. MACDONALD’S INTENTIONS. NEW CABINET PROSPECTS. London, Nov.. 3. The week-end was relatively quiet owing to the leaders requiring rest after their strenuous activities. Nevertheless several Labour meetings were held in the North of England and Scotland, where there were angry, denunciations of the victorious Conservatives. The King returns to London from Sandringham to-day in expectation of Mr. MacDonald’s resignation on Tuesday, but it is possible the absence of a definite report regarding the Zinovieff affair may delay the resignation until Thursday or Friday, though the “Daily Herald” repeats that Mr. MacDonald intends to abide by his decision to retire on Tuesday regardless of the work of the committee of inquiry which Mr. MacDonald, Lord Haldane, Lord Parmoon, and Mr. Henderson are conducting concerning the Zinovieff letter. Newspapers continue speculations regarding Mr., Baldwin’s Cabinet. The opinion is expressed that in addition to the leaders already cabled, Sir W. Joynson-Hicks, Sir Samuel Hoare. Lord Derby, Marquis of Salisbury, Colonel Amery, Lord Crawford, Sir L. Worth-ington-Evans, and the # Hon. Edward Wood are likely to be included. Lord Balfour can have the Privy Seal or qny other honourable office he desires. A large body of feminine opinion considers Lady Astor or the Duchess of Atholl should be included in the Ministry, as Miss Bonfield was included in Mr. MacDonald's. Seven thousand Glasgow Labourites took part in what was called a victory rally. Mr. Neil Mac Lean said there had never been a filthier, dirtier or more corrupt election. Mr. Wheatley, expressed the opinion that the return of the Tories by such an over whelming majority would considerably hasten the end of the capitalistic system of society. The new Parliament would witness the fiercest political fight recorded in our history. The field was now cleared, of the encumbering and embarrassing Liberal party. The party now knew exactly where they were. Mr. Jowett, speaking at Bradford, said he feared the confidence of the people in political action W’as weakened owing to the Conservative victory. The striving for better conditions would be transferred from the political to the industrial field. The “Daily. Express’s” Geneva correspondent states that it is considered in League of Nations circles that Mr. Baldwin’s Government will not ratify the disarmament protocol, which will become automatiMuly void, and that the projected disarmament conference will not be held. The structure of the protocol must be rebuilt by the next Assembly.—(A. and N.Z.)
