A LABORATORY DISASTER.
WORKERS POISONED BY FUMES. UNFORTUNATE PETROL i EXPERIMENT. New York, Oct. 31. Five employees of the Standard Oil Company’s plant in New Jersey are dead through inhaling tetraethyl lead fumes in experiments to increase the efficiency of petrol, and 44 other laboratory workers are under treatment. The gas produces insanity and five of the victims died in straitjackets, raving maniacs. Five of those under treatment are in a serious condition. Regarding the remainder the hospital authorities say some are suffering from headaches, others from mental disturbances and mild delirium. Other symptoms are low blood prersure and extreme nervousness. Physicians at first were at a loss how to deal with the case, but now believe that injections of hyposulphite of soda are having a beneficial effect. The New York Health Commissioner has now prohibited the use of petrol I treated with tetraethyl lend* and simL lareaction is expected elsewhere. State officials are holding an investigation.— (A. and N.Z.)
