PUBLIC SERYICE.

REGRADING GENERALLY APPROVED. The comments of the “Public Service Journal,” just issued; on the re-cently-issued classification list and the regrading of the public service, are generally of a complimentary nature to the labours of the commissioner. “We believe that the Public Service Commissioner,” states the “Journal,” “has consistently endeavoured to be fair to the public service, and wheae he was convinced that an improvement in scale was merited, has granted it, in whole or in part, having regard to the limitations of the public purse. In some directions, however, the association considers that the Commissioner has not gone far enough, and wo are particularly disappointed with his failure to raise the maximum of Class VII. in the clerical division and to provide for a substantial increase for the prisons officers to cover the long hours worked. No increase has been made in the minimum salary for married men nor has a definite salary been fixed for an officer of twenty-one years of age, but we cannot altogether hold the Public Service Commissioner fully responsible for these two lacks because both would require a determination by Cabinet.” A long list of improvements—increases in salary—is given. It is not likely that the Appeal Board will sit until December at the earliest.
