“SKID ON GREASY RAILS.” CONDUCTOR COWAN’S BRAVERY. Sydney, Oct. 1. At the inquest on the tram smash at McMahon’s point departmental evidence showed that the cars were inspected before starting on the journey and were in gdod condition and the brakes acting, but the controller was jammed owing to the holding screws being loose. The wheels skidded on the greasy rails going down the steep hill. Those in charge did all possible to avert a disaster after the tram got out of control.

A verdict of accidental death was returned. The coroner complimented, in the name of tho public, Conductor Cowan for sticking to his post to the very end in face of what appeared certain death ■Cowan, after the accident, completely lost his memory, which he has only partially regained so far.
