En route westward from High River, the Prince of Wales will spend several hours iu the Jasper House trading station. He stays one day at Vancouver and one at Victoria, return ing to his ranch about the ninth and leaving for the East on October 11. He was to attend a stock sale on his ranch yesterday. The sale wag to be the first annual dispersal of imported and home bred Scotch Shorthorns and Hampshire and Shropshire rams. Th.e sale was to be preceded by a picnic of the Alberta, Shorthorn Breeders’ Association, which the Prince was to attend.

Lord and Lady Jellicoe have arranged to leave Wellington on October 6th in order to pay a number of farewell visits in the South Island. They will stay in Invercargill from the 7th to tile 10th. a visit to Bluff on the 9th being included. Short visits to Mataura and Gore will he paid on the 19th on the way back to Dunedin, where Their Excellencies will stay until the 14th. In addition to other engagements in Dunedin, His Excellency will lay the foundation stones of the new dental school and of - the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. On October 14th His Excellency has promised to lay the foundation stone of the Oamaru Fallen Soldiers’ Memorial. During his visit to Timaru from October 14 to 16. His Excellency will open a new sailors’ rest building. On the 16th short farewell visits will be paid to Temukfi and Ashburton on the way to Christchurch, where Their Excellencies will stay until the 21st. In addition to civic, Masonic and Navy League functions in Christchurch there will he a Boys Scouts’ and Girl Guides’ rally on October 18 and His Excellency will be entertained by tho Christch ireh Club and Royal Colonial liisl.tiv.e. On Sunday afternoon, October 19, His Excellency has arranged to unveil the Ellesmere county war memorial, at Leeston. Their Excellencies will return to Wellington on October 22.

Mrs H. Clifford Janes, afft Hastings this morning for Shannon, where she rejoins her husband, who has been appointed postmaster in that locality. Mrs Janes was accompanied by her family. The “Times” Masterton correspondent advises that Mr Matson has been appointed acting engineer to the" Borough Council, vice Mr Dodge, who resigned in order to accept the position o' engineer to the Avondale Borough Council.

Among the successful candidates for surveyor’s license, at the examination conducted by the Surveyors’ Board recently, was Mr. Angus J. Wattie, of Auckland, son of Mr. W. J. Wattie. of Mahora North, Hastings. Mr. Wattie is on the staff of the Lands and Survey Department at Auckland. After twenty-four years in the service of the Agricultural Department, Colonel A. R. Young, Director of the Live Stock Division, retired yesterday upon superannuation. The members of the staff of the Department assembled in large numbers on Monday afternoon to bid him farewell.

Mr Fred Garnett, who was on a visit to his mother, Mrs J. Garnett, of Hastings, left this morning on his return to Christchurch. Mr Thomaa Dodds, also of Christchurch, who accompanied Mr Garnett, left by the same train.

Mr. Frank Scott, one time attached to the staff of the Gisborne Magistrate’s Court staff, and who has been spending six months’ sick leave in Hastings, hag now reco»£ed and has been appointed clerk, oi the Magistrate’s and Warden’s Courts at Cromwell, in Central Otago. The Rev. J. A. Hosking, Methodist minister, died at Otahuhu yesterday, aged 52. states a telegram from Auckland. Deceased entered the ministry in 1894, serving in Christchurch. Dannevirke and Eltham before going to Otahuhu two and a half years ago. His wife died a year ago. He leaves five children.

The Commercial Hotel at Rimu (Wesi Coast) and the reading room adjoining were destroyed by firo at four o'clock this morning. Tho adjoining premise* were badly scorched, and very little furniture was saved. W. E. Ren nison, tho liconseo has 'only been in possession for a few months. —Press Association.

Mr G. Elmslie, H.M. Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, proposes to make his first visit to Hawke’s Bay on or about October Ist, and as he will b 0 u couple of days in Hastings it is hoped to be able to arrange a Chamber of Cymmerce luncheon lecture at which Mr Elmslie, who wishes to meet the leading business men and producer*, would deliver an address. Mr Elmslip also intends to visit Napier and Gisborne, at which latter town ho habeen asked to address tho members of the Chamber of Commerce,

The funeral of Mrs Gertrude Tindall took place this afternoon, when the body was conveyed from tho residence, Ellison road to the Hastings, cemetery, where Rev R. T. Hall conducted the final rites, before the coffin was laid in the ground. A large and representative gathering of citizens assembled to pay a last tributed of respect to deceased, and when the interment was complete, a last tribute of respect to deceased, were laid on the mound, mcluding one from the children of the Hastings Central School.
