HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Hastings Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. G. A. Maddison) (chair). Ors. J. Simmons, F. W. Cook, T. Donovan, N. Beatson. A. J. Kirkham. P. M. Cohr and M. Johnson. Leave of absence was given to Or. McKee. CORRESPONDENCE.
New Zealand Institute of Architects intimated that they were not terming any standard building by-laws, but the State Forestry Department, had considered the subject, so that information could be obtained from the Director of Forestry.—Forestry Department to be written to.
Executive Municipal Association intimated that the suggested amendments to the Motor Vehicles Bill would be brought under the notice of the Minister. Conservator State Forests advised having railed two cases of treea, for use this year in the council’s planting scheme, and asked to be advised as to how they succeeded.—The trees have been planted. Mr. Poppelwell complained of the danger arising from the blasting operations being carried out in Beatson’s Park. H. S. B. Ribbands, secretary of the Park vale Golf Club, referring to die above letter, asked permission to continue the removal of the Beatson Park tree stumps, where necessary. The work was inadvertently commenced without the consent of the council.—Permission granted, provided die usual conditions are complied with as specified by the inspector. It was stated that responsibility for accidents rested with the Paxkvale Golf Club. E. H. AVilliams. in reply to a letter, asking permission to allow private motor cars to be parked on certain sections in Karamu road, regretted that the syndicate was unable to comply with the request, but they would allow the council to park cars on the property until further notice, on condition that, while the property was so used, the rates on the property be rem i tted. —Rece i ved.
, Public AVorks Department advised that tliey decided to form and metal Jellicoe street, through to Collinge road, and asked if the council would undertake the work and if so, at what cost.—To be informed that the council would supervise the work free of cost, if the Public AVorks Department carried it out. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER’S REPORT. (1) New Plant.—The new plant in the powar house will be ready to run 24 hours’ full load trials on Monday, 15th. September. 1 have notified the contractor and have received a reply that hi 8 representative will be present. (2) Poles.—The poles to carry high tension wires are now in position up to Poh road, where the sub-station is placed on the top of two poles, (3) Guards on Poles.—The telegraph engineer has paid a visit with the result that we are now ordered to put guards on the top of high tension poles to protect the telegraph wires where they intersect. The report was adopted.
GENERAL. lb was decided, on the motion of the Mayor, and Cr. Simmons, “that application be made to the Underwriters’ Association, asking that Hastings be placed on a mure favourable rating basis, a.s regards fire insurance.” The Mayor pointed out that Hastings possessed a most efficient Fire Brigade, a new and up-to-date engine and a first-class plant generally and when they wore spending so much money on fire fighting, they were entitled to consideration regarding the reduction of rates. The matter of installing a fire alarm system was also being considered. Cr. Simmons added that the town had an efficient water supply.
