HORTICULTURE.

A FORWARD MOVE. SCIENTIFIC AND PRACTICAL WORK. Wellington. Julv 30. An important conference on the subject of horticulture i«s to bo held in Wellington next week. Prior to the isecond annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, arrangements are being made for the appointment of a Wellington council nf the institute, and delegates to the Dominion Conference will be selected. District Councils have already been formed in Dunedin Auckland. Christchurch, and Palmerston North, and some of our leading educationalists and horticulturists are identified with the movement. “The objects of the institute,’’ state th© conveners, “are many and varied. It stands to improve and foster everv branch of horticulture; one of its objectives is educa_ tional. It hopes to assist in the establishment of a school or schools of horticulture for the Dominion, besides a large amount of scientific and practical work as oppostunity offers. It aims to be a unifying authority, exercising a leading part in moulding public opinion on horticultural matters, and assisting all interests now at work in that direction. We believe that Wellington, with its central position widtei range of horticultural possibilities, and its splendid edcuational advantages, will be prepared to take its rightful place in this important matter, especially in furthering education along this very important branch of science. Realising the importance of the field covered by the institute the Government has made a grant of £l5O, £ for £, to assist the organisation work of the institute, for this year.” The conveners of the movement in Wellington are:—Messrs L. Cockayne, Department of Agriculture; J. B. Harcourt T. W, Kirk, J. G. MacKenzie. Superintendent City Reserves; W. J. Thompson, C. H. Treadwell, J. A. Campbell, Department of Agriculture; and Professor Kirk, Victoria College.
