RUGBY FOOTBALL.
HASTINGS SUB-UNION. The Hastings Rugby Sub-union last night made a recommendation to the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union that the Hawke’s Bay Ranfurly Shield team be put into a week’s training for the match against Auckland, the training to commence at the conclusion of the Nelson match; this recomendation, of course, to bo conditional on Havvjke’s Bay retaining the Shield qgainst Nelson. WAIPAWA V. HASTINGS. TO-DAY’S MATCH. The weather was fine for the match, Waipawa v. Hastings, played on the Nelson ground, Hastings, this afternoon, and there was a largo attendance. The teams were as follows:—
Waipawa.—Full-back, Thorne; thre< quarters, Lowes, A. Russell. Groves; five-tighths, Booth and Mclntyre; half Spooner (captain); wingforward. Parker; forwards, Munro, Davey, Bloor, Nicholls, Nicol, Prendeville, Patchett. Hastings.—Full-back. P. Barney; three-quarters, Falwasser, J. Blake, B. ! Grenside; five-eighths, C. Kingston and L Macken; half, W. Shortland; wingforward, R. Tairua; forwards. A. Kirkpatrick (captain), Cairns, Campbell, McNab, Miller. Richardson. J. Joll. In the Hastings team J. Tait replaced Hingston, and in the Waipawa team Draper replaced Lowes and Johnson Munro. Mr. E. Anderson refereed. HASTINGS WINS TOSS. Hastings won the toss, and played with the sun in their taces. A guod piece oi play by Nicholl had Hastings uelending, but Macken put in a great run to vvaipawa’s twenty-hve where Bussell relieved. Good runs were made by Falwasser, Barney and McxXab, and Vvaipuwa were hard put to it to prevent a score. Mclntyre at last got ins side out of difficulties, and Hastings were defending in their twenty-hve, from where Grenside put in a great run until he reached the full-back Thorne, who brought him down with a hue tackle. Parker retired hurt, and Dillon replaced him. J. Blake narrowly missed scoring, losing the ball as he was about to fall over the line. Tait was prominent, and Russell saved Waipawa with a splendid kick. Waipawa pressed in Hastings’ 25, and Bloor marked, but i
no goal resulted. Parker again came on. Hastings set up a hot attack, and a good chance to score was lost by Richardson being off-side. Barney saved with a great kick when Waipawa looked dangerous in Hastings’ quarters. A good passing rush by Shortland, Tait, Blake and Grenside shifted play to Waipawa’s territory, when Patchett and Nicoll were responsible for Hastings’ territory being invaded again and Russell had an unsuccessful shot at goal from a penalty. Prendeville, Parker and Nicoll rushed the ball to near Hastings’ line, where Barney splendidly saved. Russell marked, in front of the goal, but the ball went WIPAWA SCORES FIRST. | Even play followed for a time, and Spooner put in a good run. Mclntyre raced over from the ensuing play ,and scored behind. Russell’s luck was successful. Waipawa 5 Hastings 0 A free kick relieved Waipawa when Hastings was looking dangerous on their line. Tait marked, and then Rus sell, Nicoll and Draper were conspipuous. Blake and Grenside put good play, and a score was narrowly averted.
