BEFORE 140,000 SPECTATORS. Studebaker Special Secures Second Place in Great Indianapolis 500-mile Race.—Earl Cooper, the famous American race driver, secured second place in the great Indianapolis 500-Mile Scratch Race, averaging 97.99 miles per hour for th© whole distance. At 445 miles, Cooper led by 30 seconds, when h© was compelled to change a tyre, which took 18 seconds. At 450 miles he stopped 15 seconds to change another tyre. These stops cost him the race .although the pit work was remarkably good The winner’s average was 98.24 miles per hour. Cooner won the majority of lap prizes. His actual running time wag 32 seconds faster than the winner’s. Thirty-one cars entered; 1 Studebaker started; 1 Studebaker finished The H-0.8 won thi s race last year.—The Tourist Motor Co., Ltd., agents for Studebaker and H.C.S., Hastings.
