BETTING CASES.

PROSECUTIONS AT NAPIER. SUBSTANTIAL FINES IMPOSED. At the Napier Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr R. W. Dyer S.M. John Albert Le Ban pleaded guiltv to betting in Tennyson street on April 22nd.. and Hastings street on April 18th. The police stated that he had been carrying on double betting for about two* years and of late he had been doing straight out betting. Under police instructions, a man named Woods backed various horses. Accused gave Woods three cards in Pirie’s billiard saloon on Hie Auckland and Feilding meetings, Books and cards were, iound and disclosed that he had carried on only in a small way. He was quite a decent citizen. Accused had a crippled child and a delicate wife and in consequence they did not ask for the maximum fine. A fine of £2O was inflicted, in default two months’ imprisonment/ one month being allowed in which to pay the fine. Thomas Cato Paterson also pleaded guiltv to street betting in Waghorne street on April 19th and Emerson street on April 21st. The police stated when Paterson was arrested, in his possession were found cards and other betting papers and double cards for Auckland, Waipukurau and Wairarapa meetings were made out. Woods had entered bets. The accused had not done any work for the last two years but he did not go in for betting on a very big scale. Fines totalling £5O for the two charges were imposed, in default two months’ imprisoment one week being allowed to pay the fine. OTHER OASES ADJOURNED. The following were charged with breaches of the Gaming A&t: William Hutton. Jamss Oorless, Alfred Ernest Elwood, Henry James Robinson Reginald Orange. William Cum, and James Samuel Golding. On the application of their counsel they were remanded to appear next Thursday. Bail in £lOO and one surety of £lOO was allowed in each case.
