FOOTBALL.

HASTINGS SUB-UNION. . The matches in the competition under the auspices of the Hastings Sub-Union were resumed on Saturday, and again some fine football was witnessed- At Nelson Park there was. a large attendance. Following are brier details of the various games played SENIOR. M.A.O. (21) v.,H.5.0.8. (11). Even play for a time followed the kick-off, aiyj then Potaka put his side on the aggressive, which resulted in Mardon getting across. Fisher failed with the kick. H. 5.0.8. 3, M.A.O. 0. This reverse shook the Maoris up, and they worked the ball right up to Old Boys’ line, where Taua scored a try under the posts, but Mako failed to convert. M.A.O. 3, H. 5.0.8. 3. Shortly afterwards as the result of some good passing T. Mapuki added another three points to M.A.O.’s score, by the aid of a try, Maku being unsuccessful with the kick. Then H. 5.0.8. set up a hot attack and Fisher obtained a try which Johnson was unsuccessful in converting, making the scores even. Just before the spell ended Ricketts scored, and Fisher landing a beautiful goal, the scores standing H. 5.0.8. 11. M.A.O. 6. In the second half, the Napier boys fell to pieces before the superior passing tactics of the M.A.O. backs, Falwesser being especially prominent. The latter put in a fine run. which resulted in Vea scoring a try, which Nephi Maku made no mistake in converting. M.A.O. 11, H. 5.0.8. 11. Faafenee added another, Nephi Maku converting. and shortly afterwards Taumata scored, Nephi Maku again being successful with the kick. The game ended M.A.C. 21, H. 5.0.8 11. Mr. R. JConndr refereed.

CELTIC (8) v. TE AUTE (5). The scores are fair indication of the strength of each team. Celtics started well and had Te Ante on the defensive. Tait put in a fine run and narrowly missed scoring a. try, and then J. Blake and McNab were prominent. To Ante then got going, and looked dangerous, but J, Blake came to the rescue with a fine piece of tackling. Hatton put in a good kick, and Te Auto was penned

in its twenty-five, where R. Blake put in a brilliant run and scored. His kick was rcsuHless. Celtic 3, Te Aute 0. T© Ante got the backs going, but good chances of scoring were spoilt by the failure of the last link in the attack to take the ball. J. Blake and Hatton shifted play towards To Ante’s territory, where a certain try was missed owing to a bad pass by Pothan to Hatton. Te Aute. who were warming up, again gained ground with passing runs, only to be.brought back again bv splendid forward work by the Celtics. J. Blake put in a great run and just missed scoring. Shortly after th e start of the second spell Te Aute spoilt a great chance of equalising the score by a wild juass. and then Tait and McNab and the Blake Bros, and Pothan were instrumental in forcing the College lads back. Celtics were awarded a free kick but nothing was gained by it. For the next twenty minutes Te Ante made matters very willing, and it looked as if they would score at any moment, but faulty handling frustrated their efforts. Celtics with a renewed effort put in a strong attack and McNab got over. Le Quesne converted, and the score stood Celtic 8, Te Ante 9. Te Aute then became aggressive, and were at last I rewarded. Pipi scoring a good try, which Wona converted. Te Aute 5, Celtic 8. Te Ante put in another good run, but a pass by one of their backs was finely intercepted by Tait. Grace and Potaka were prominent, and onc« again a score was missed through mulling. Celtics then had the upper hand, and R. BTifke got over but lost the ball. McNab also narrowly missed scoring, and the game shortly afterwards ended. Mr. A. Anderson was the referee.

Pirates (16) v. Hastings (6>. This match was played at MeLeaii Park, Napier. Pirates kicked off and following up quickly took the play inside the viators’ 25 line. C. Brownlie securing, brought relief with a fine kick, putting them on the aggressive. Mitchell missed a shot at the goal. Play was in Pirates favour for a few moments. Kirkpatrick after gathering in was forced to kick, which was well marked by N. Kiveli. Yates missed with a shot from half way. Syme, securing, made a fine but was forced out almost on the line. A rush by thy, home forwards brought play into the visitors’ territory, Mitchell again making a line save. Hastings forwards made a great attempt, Compton just failing to secure a penalty. Symes, intercepting from M. Grenside, got away and passed in field to Musson, who made a fine dash and got over at the corner. Yates converted with a fine kick. B. Grenside failed ‘with a shot. Hastings pressed hotly, severely testing- the defcmce. A free kick for obstruction failed. Smith, wingforward of the Pirates, securing, got away, but was brought down by B. Grenside, the bull going out. The visitors again pressed, but Syme relieved. M. Grenside took <i good pass, but was carried out almost on the line Beuth securing from the line out. passed to B. Grenside, who made a brilliant dash, passing to Mitchell, who on being collared had his knee put out, and had to be taken off the field. Half time sounded shortly afterwards without fur tli er score.

On resuming, Maclean replaced Mitchell. A passing rush by Hastings forwards carried play within a few yards, of the line. Kiveli, gather mg quickly, relieved with a fine kick across the field to Smith, who curried down the field. Syme got possession from a long pass, and fell over tho ball on the line. Yates made no mistake in annexing the extra points. M. Brownlie, getting possession, made a great attempt, but was brought down by Yates after eluding several players. Luck went against the visitors, and they were strongly pressed. Macleam forced down. Yates returned with a good kick, Maclean fielding to the centre. Kiveli received from a pass and got over near the corner.- Yates failed to convert. A forward rush by Hastings with plenty of sting swept down the field, enabling B. Grenside to get over. M. Brownlie’s kick went wide. From a line out M. Brownlie secured, and made a great run, his kick being marked by Kiveli. Strenuous play followed the visitors endeavouring to reduce the lead. The defence, however, was sound. Syme gaining possession from a scrum dived over. Yates failed to convert. Another rush by the visiting forwards had the Pirates on the defence. Gn_nsiuu, with a brilliant dash, got over but failed with the kick Time sounded two minutes later, play being in mid-field. Mr F. Tyne controlled the game.

M. 8.0.8. (30) v. Havelock North (11). Marist were the first to make points, Le Quesne getting over from n scrum. The scores were soon made level by Macken lucking a fine penalty, Marist Hacks broke away with a fine rush, the ball going Gut to Nehemia on tho wing, who got over. McCarthy converted. Havelock pressed for a time and Taiaroa, securing from a serum, dived over. Macken’s kick made the scores even at half time.

After resumption of play a keen struggle followed without advantage to either side. Macken smartly intercepted and made a good run down the field. When he was tackled Nikera carried on and scored. The Greens quickly made good the reverse, and a good forward rush ended with Bond scoring under the posts, McCarthy converting. For the remainder of the game Marist had matters all their own way, tries being scored by Mahoney (2), Gemmell and Swainson, while McCarthy kicked a penalty goal. Mr C. 8. Findlay was in charge of the game. JUNIOR. T e Auto (24) v. Celtic (5). Te Aute gave a line exposition of passing, and quite nonplussed Celtic lit the latter stages of the game. For Te Aute G, Lancaster (2), K. Haenga, Bapaira (2), and Raana obtained tries, three of which were converted by Itarewa, Wicliif, and Raana. Begley scored a try lor the losers, and Fitzgerold converted. Mr. G. A. Maddison was the referee. Rovers (18) .v. Havelock North (3). In me nrst spell the scores were even, three points each. in the second, however, Rovers had their opponents at meir mercy, putting on io points. For the winners, AlcKennie (2), Johnson, Dunn, Drummond and Foster scored tries, and lop the losers McKenzie registered a try. Mr. Avison refereed. 11.5.0.8. v. Taradale. This match was played on Taradale Park in the presence of a good attendance. The visitors’ win by a margin of 15 piints was no indication of the play. Th© home team showed very weak combination but in the forward they were slightly superior. Downes at half was very nippy and always picked up the leather clean. For Taradale N. Janies and J. Reid were outstanding. For the winners tries were scored by O'Brien (2), Chetwin and Hogg, the latter also kicking the penally ami converting once. Downes also converted once. For Taradale Mac Neill and Howell scored, one try lining converted by Ellis. Air. J. JI. Gifford controlled the game.

Technical 0.8. (5) v. M. 8.0.8. (0) f l he match between these teams provided the spectators with an interesting game, there being hut little difference between the two. During the first spell ■ Biggs succeeded in crossing

The defeat of the High Scliool was a great surprise. Parkvale deieated Havelock Nortn at the Kidge by 6 u> nil. Mr. Aleade ret ereed.

WELLINGTON SEASON OPENED. Wellington, ApJl 27. Heavy ram spoilt tne opening of the Rugby football season, but despite unlavourable conditions promising play was shown. Poneke fought a nard game against Berhampoie but the strong team could only draw, three each. Athletic were superior to Old Boys, whom they defeated by 11 to nil. The ex-collegians improved towards the end. Aiarjst were much superior to Wellington and beat them by 13 to nil. Selwyn were lucky in heating University by 8 to 6. At the end it was a Scramble in the mud and was everybody’s game. Petone easily disposed of. Hutt by 9 to nil.

ENGLISH CUP TIE. WON BY NEWCASTLE UNITED. London. April 25. Newcastle United beat Aston Villa by two goals to nil. SOCCER AT WELLINGTON. Wellington, Apirl 27. Wellington defeated the Fleet by four goals to two. For Wellington Campbell (2.) Stocks and Bulland scored, while Robinson scored twice for the Fleet.
