WEST AUSTRALIAN ELECTIONS.
HEAVY POLLING. Perth, March 23. Great interest was taken in the State elections yesterday. The polling was heavy. A total of 120 candidates contested 50 seats. Four parties were in th© field—Nationalists, Labourites, Ministerial, and Country. There were also 14 Independents. The chief issue at stake was whether the Mitchell Nationalist Government retains the confidence of the electors in its immigration and land settlement schemes. The returns so far are too incomplete to indicate the result, GOVERNMENT DEFEAT INDICATED. (Received 24. 11.10 a.m.) Perth, March 24. Out of. 13 electorates where the counting is completed Labour secured seven and the Nationalists six, giving Labour 18 in the new House, as 11 of their candidates were returned unopposed. Labour won three metropolitan seats from the Government and is leading in several country and goldfield electorates. The indications are that Labour will secure 23 or more seats and with the anti-Ministerial section of the Country Party will outnumber the Government. The Premier retained his seat by a narrow margin and the Leader of the Opposition was also returned. Mrs. Cowan (Nationalist), the only woman member of Parliament in Australia, was defeated.
