WAIPAWA.

(Own correspondent). BAND CONCERT The Carnival Band, under the baton of Mr. B. J. Cosgrave, gave a fine programme Hi the Domain after church hours on Sunday evening. The number present was very large, who evinced their pleasure by applauding each item, especially th e number “Lead Kindly Lignt,” which was beautifully rendered. At at previous concerts the pleasure was considerably marred by children making the vicinity of the band stand a playground. MEMORIAL SITE. A deputation, appointed by the Progressive Association meeting on Friday evening, waited on Mr, W. J. Flynn on Tuesday afternoon in connection with the site adjoining the war memorial and Mr. Flynn’s offer of 40 feel at £2 per foot was accepted for the sale of the section. The privilege of a right-of-way at the back of the section is conceded to Mr. Flynn. CARNIVAL MATTERS. A very largely attended meeting was held in the Borough Chambers on Friday evening to receive the accounts in connection with the late carnival and decide on future operations. The statement showed receipts totalling £835 7s lid and expenditure £177 13s 6d. leaving a credit of £657 14s sd. The chairman (Mr. C. H. Critchley) in moving its adoption, pa'd a tribute to th© excellent, work done by the various committees and made special reference to Mrs J. A. Hogg, who threw her heart and soul into th© work. Eulogistic references were also paid to the work of the secretary (Mr. W. J. Pellow) and an honorarium of £lO was voted to him.

A committee reported waiting on Mr. Flynn in connection with a suggestion to acquire a section adjoining the memorial site and getting terms as regards price. The offer, however, was modified at a later stage of the meeting and it was then decided to further wait on the owner of the section.

Mr. Harker, on behalf of the R.S.A., said that the local branch had a fund of about £4O which the Progressive Association could draw on to find employment for the returned wen on the memorial site.

H e also expressed a wish that the R.S.A. would like to be consulted before a definite scheme was decided on. The meeting then adjourned to a dat© after some finality had been reached in the matter of the section referred to. HEAVY RAIN.
