RAIN IN THE SOUTH.

WELCOME FALL IN MARLBOROUGH. . Blenheim, Dec. 19. During the early hours of this morning steady rain set in, thus breaking the drought which has held the province in its gnii for the past few months, soaking the parched countryside. One farmer put it this morning as the best Christmas gift which Marlborough could possibly have received, as it means literally the salvation of many small landholders whose crops were in a perilous condition. Unfortunately the rain is rather too late to benefit the oat crops, many of which have ripened prematurely in the blazing sun of the last couple of months. Indeed in all parts of the district many crops of oats have already been reaped. Growers of peas, however, are rubbing their hands in glee.

STEADY’ RAIN AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, Dec. 20. lhere has been a steady rainfall since yesterday afternoon in both town and country, which has completely broken up the drought. It was timely relief from a threatening situation caused by the prolonged dry spell.
