THE PHILIPPINES.
DEMAND FOR INDEPENDENCE. DEPUTATION TO PRESIDENT COOLIDGE. Wshington, Dec. 15. The Philippine request for independence was presented for the first time to the Coolidge administration. A mission presented the resolutions adopted by the Philipine Legislature, asking for the recall of the GovernorGeneral, Major-General Wood, for a guarantee of the decree of autonomy guaranteed under the Jones Act and for a final determination of the form of government, for the islands. President Coolidge, under advice, made no statement. Prior ro the conference the President let it be known that the administration was firmly behind Governor Wood and that it was in favour of complete autonomy as soon as the United States was assured that the people were entirely capable of selfgovernment. —(A. and N.Z.)
