OTANE.
(Own Correspondent.) The tennis match in the Neal aud Close competition, C grade between AVaipukurau and Otane, took place on the local courts on Saturday afternoon, resulting in a win for the home team on a very narrow margain, Otane scoring eight matches and 102 games, and AVaipukurau eight matches and 95 games The last of the year’s regular monthly meeting of the Otauo branch of ihe Mothers’ Union was held in St. James’s Church on Thursday ,the Vicar taking the service. Afterwards the mothers and their children adjourned to the A icarage and whilst the children were amused in the grounds, the mothers were able to enjoy thoroughly an address by Mrs Henley, who is always very happy in her help in this way. General business was then transacted and Mrs K. H. Tod’s generous invitation to a garden party in December was thankfully accepted. Tho work of the union goes on happily and enthusiastically and promises to bo much larger next year, although the membership is now very good for a small place, num Bering 23 members and associates with Mrs Dawson as president and Mrs Rough as secretary and treasurer. On November 30th, St. Andrew’s Day, a whole day of intercession was held from 7 # a.m. to 11 p.m. in the Anglican parish, 'and various services were held on behalf of Foreign Missions and missionaries and all the 48 quartir-hour appointments were taken up. Tho dry weather still persists in the district it is having a most disastrous effect on the gardens and the water supply is getting very low, some of the householders having to carry water already.
