NAPIER SAILING CLUB.

OPENING OF THE SEASON. (By “Eleonore.”) There was a very large attendance of enthusiastic members and their friends at the opening of the season held on Saturday afternoon at Westshore. Although the weather conditions were very threatening, it was an ideal day for sailing, and a v<ery large number accepted the club’s invitation; and enjoyed a sail round the harjlaul*. Th© Mayor (Mr. J. B. Andrew) attended and during the course of a brief speech extended a welcome to visitors on behalf of the club, invited all to take a sail, and officially declared the season open. Th© yachts were gaily decorated with strings of flags, and one used strings of coloured baloons with good effect Afternoon tea was obtainable in th-? pavilion. Mesdames T. Hutchinson and S. Hannah being in charge, assisted by Mesdames Williams, Oakley, Misses E. McCarthy. A. Hayhow, Murphy and V. Williams. The tea tables were daintily decorated with crimson roses and blue larkspur. Far-, quhar 1, Amos Taylor 2. In the swimming events Geabb and Coutts each won a race. Great interest was taken in the exhibition of racing in the speed launches (hydroplane boats). Mr F- vop, Kettle’s boat broke down at the height of excitement and Mr. Taylor towed it in. Mr. Webb was a most efficient secretary and all officials and club members did their utmost to give the visitors a good time.
