SWIMMING

The first actual carnival of the season will be conducted at the popular Havelock North baths , on November 22nd. It will be followed next Friday by the Heretaunga opening club night at the Maddison baths. With decent weather both fixtures are sure to be well attended, Last week the keenness of swfimmers in Hastings was very strongly demonstrated. Every evening the baths were freely patronised and towards the end of the week both water and weather were so delightfully warm that for every swimmer the baths were a nearly irresistible attraction.

The popular relayl series for the Crooks Diamonds will be recommenced at the Heretaunga opening splash next Friday. Last season these trophies, presented by Mr. A. Crooks, proved a 'successful innovation, and were instrumental in developing a high standard of swimming among the younger enthusiasts in particular. At times as many as twenty-five to thirty teams 'entered, and competition was very keen while this season it is anticipated that the interest aroused will be greater still, and an entry of fifteen to twenty relay teams is expected for the first night alone.

It* accordance with its custom the Heyctaunga Club has arranged for evening swims again this season as a privilege of membership. Between seven and nine the baths are well lighted, and those unable to have a splash during daylight can do so under the best conditions in the evening.

Although it is yet early in the season to make any estimates of form it is pleasing for one to record that thus early there have been several prominent swimmers putting in steady practice. Notable among them are Crooks and Rose, both of whom show promising form; and also a likely? trio in Graham, Martin and McLean, three colts who lifted the Diamonds twice last season. Martin has demonstrated remarkable improvement this seasonHe has developed his style and has the virtues of keenness and consistency, while at the same time he promises to he one of the neatest divers in Hawke’s Bay.
