WAIPAWA NOTES.
CONFIRMATION SERVICE. J (Own Correspondent.) e St. Peter’s Church, Waipawa, was r packed on Friday evening, when 21 ’ candidates, fifteen girls and six boys t were presented by Canon Butterfield to the Bishop of the diocese, Dr Sedgwick, . for confirmation. The ceremony was most impressive. His Lordship, in a i powerful address, after quoting from a poem by John Oxenham, “No Room for i Christ of Galilee,” said the words were applicable to the godless system of education adopted in the Dominion, and referred to the prevalance of divorce. The Bishop also stressed the claims of the young generation on the parents. The clergy were concerned at the indifference, and in many eases open hos tility in the fight of the children against evil and compared this with a parent’s concern for his child in any race or game ■ of sport. An early celebration of Holy Com- i munion was held on Friday morning at 1 which over 60 partook of tho Blessed Sacarament, the Bishop being tho celebrant, assisted by Canon Butterfield. WAR MEMORIAL. A largely attended meeting of tho ; public, presided over by Mr Critchley, < was held in the Borough Council Cham- J bers last evening with the object of considering the completion of the War 1 Memorial, and it w T as resolved to hold : a carnival late in February or early 1 in March to raise funds for the purpose. 1 Various committees were set up to con- 1 trol each branch of the function, ana * they are to meet before the New Year, J and report on a general scheme. It will then be decided whether to make j the period of the carnival one, two, or three days. It will probably bo two £ days, the star event on tho first day f being combined school sports. HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS. J A deputation consisting of Messrs L. c Prately, J. Kerr and L. Hollings wait- € ed on the Education Board on Thursday in reference to the conveyance of pupils from Onga and Rutaniwha to the Wai- t pawa District High School. r The deputation was given a sympa- v thetic hearing. The chairman of tho I Board mentioned that under the present t regulations the allowance provided for u 20 puipls would be £l4O, and he prac- r tically assured the deputation that the d Board would contribute half the additional cost for a service if the parents * subscribed tho balance.
