PAYMENT OF RATES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —The letter written by Mr. H. tl. French in Thursday’s issue re paynent of rates displays neither iore.hought, consideration or knowledge. I'hc present Council was not elected intil the end of April, and the rates ?ould not be struck until the estimates vere compiled and the amount assessed igainst each ratepayer, which is a long Mid arduous job. From information 1 have obtained it has been customary tor the Council to pass the resolution he mentions about this time of the year. If people do not pay their rates then the borough will have interest to pay on overdraft, and possibly an extra rate will have to be levied for this. 1 am certain the Council will not deal unreasonably with any ratepayer. —1 am, etc. CITIZEN. Hastings, 16/11/23.
