The House of Commons censure motion was rejected by 285 to 190.—(A. and N.Z.)

The motion, tabled by Mr Ramsay MacDonald and Mr J. R. Clynes, was as follows:—

That this House censures the neglect of the Government to deal with the pressing needs of the unemployed; regrets its failure to devise and pursue a national policy calculated to restore the influence of the country abroad and re-establish national peace and trade; condemns the iecision of the Gpvernment to leave millions of British people in want in order to fight an election on an undisclosed scheme of tariffs and Imperial preference conceived by section of capitalists in their own interests, the effect of which must be to increase the cost of living and encourage the r formation of antisocial trusts and combines. PRESENT STATE OF PARTIES. The present Parliament was elected on November 15th, 1922—exactly a year ago—and met on November 20th, when the strength of parties was as follows:— Conservatives 344 Labour 142 Liberals 61 National Liberals 58 Independent 6 Nationalist 2 Sinn Fein 1 Communist 1
